New Introductions
This year, Cates Family Glads brings you two new, never-before released glad varieties, rather than the usual one.
PAPAGENO 465 LM Bates 2010
When I first saw Papageno, I thought, “It looks very much like The Clown, but in shade of rose rather than salmon." A clown look-alike deserved a clown name. Papageno is the delightful clown/bird-peddler in Mozart’s Magic Flute.
People really seem to like “the glad with the fascinating face.” A teacher bought enough at a Portland flower shop to supply each student with a floret as a model to paint in art class.
No description here; see the picture by our daughter, Margaret. Because we have a good supply of Papageno, we are offering large or medium bulbs for $4.

SUNNY SUNDAY 414 LM Cates 2010
We have found this glad to be the perfect late summer golden yellow. It’s tall, healthy, and has sturdy stems. It’s great for the garden or for designing. We haven’t shown Sunny Sunday, but it should compete well. Our daughter, Helen sums it up, “It’s an all-around good glad!”
As with Papageno, a good supply allows the reasonable price of $4 for large or medium-sized bulbs.
New to our listing
This year we are "re-releasing" several heirloom gladiolus varieties. We have built up enough stock in these varieties that we are able to make bulbs available for sale. Heirloom varieties new to our listing for 2010 include the following:
BLACK LASH 268 M Frederick 1976
A deep-red miniature which has won numerous awards since its introduction.
FRISKY 348 M Rich 1963
An All American deep-red, slightly ruffled variety with thin white "halo" line around its petals.
GYPSY JEWELS 465 LM Fischer 1972
Medium rose with a deeper rose blotch on a white throat.
INCA CHIEF 427 LM Fischer 1975
Tall, healthy rich orange with a yellow throat marking and needle-pointed petals.
ISLE OF CAPRI 527 M Pazderski 1982
Deep orange with an orange-red throat and white splashes below.
KING DAVID 578 M Carlson 1951
A legend in the glad world; deep purple with thin white lines around the outside petals.
LUCKY STAR 301 M J. Wright 1967
Plain, lily-like cream-colored petals with burgundy throat darts. Its major appeal is its rare fragrance.
SUNSET SKY 215 VE Balentine 1965
Medium yellow with orange markings.
WITCH DOCTOR 399 M Bork 1964
A multi-hued novelty in orange, brown, red, and gold. Better described by its photo in the gallery.
